You can write the best postcard in your town and still lose money on it.
Not because of the card. Because of where it landed.
Most schools mail the same way - draw a radius around the building, blast every house in it, hope. The problem is the town around you is not one audience. It is a dozen little pockets, and only some of them turn into students.
Mail the wrong pockets and a great card dies in a recycling bin. Mail the right ones and an average card fills a mat.
Your mailer is probably fine. Your map is the leak. Here is how to fix it.
Parents do not measure distance in miles. They measure it in minutes, on a Tuesday, after work, with a hungry kid in the back seat.
Ten minutes is easy. Fifteen is a maybe. Twenty-five minutes for a kids' class is a no, no matter how good you are.
So drop the five-mile circle. Pull up your actual drive times and mail the ring people will really cross:
A house is not a customer. A house with kids in it is.
Two neighborhoods can sit the same distance from your door and convert completely differently. One is packed with young families and school-age kids. The other is apartments, empty nesters, and college rentals. Same postage. Wildly different return.
Point your mail at where your students already live:
Real talk. Look at your current students' addresses on a map first. They already told you where the good routes are. Most owners never look.
Here is the part almost nobody uses. The USPS Every Door Direct Mail tool is free, and it does the targeting work for you.
You draw your area, and it breaks the map into carrier routes. For each route it shows the number of homes, the cost to hit them, and the demographics - average age, household size, income. That is not guessing. That is picking.
Sort for the routes with the most family-age households inside your drive-time ring. Mail those. Leave the retiree route and the industrial route alone. The whole edge is choosing where the mail goes, not just what it says.
One more mistake. Owners spray the entire town one time and call it a campaign.
Wrong move. It is better to own 2,000 of the right homes across a few drops than to touch 6,000 random ones once. Families act after they have seen you more than once, and repetition only works if it keeps landing on the same right houses.
Pick your best routes. Then hit them again a few weeks later. That is saturation, and it is how a neighborhood starts to feel like you are everywhere.
Do this today, before the Halloween drop:
That short list is your target for the whole fall - back-to-school stragglers, Halloween, and the holiday push all mail to the same right homes.
You can do every step of this yourself. The USPS tool is free and the logic is simple once you see it.
If you would rather not build maps, our EDDM postcards come ready for the drop, with fall and Halloween designs built for martial arts families - you just tell us the routes.
And if you want the targeting done for you, EDDM 360 is our done-for-you local growth campaign. We pick the high-value routes, handle the printing, and run the drops, so your mail hits the households most likely to walk in and skips the ones that never will.
A great card on the wrong map is just expensive confetti.
Fix the map first. Then the mailbox does its job.
