A parent pulls your postcard out of the mailbox standing over the trash can. You get about three seconds. The walk from the mailbox to the kitchen counter is where your card lives or dies.
Most martial arts and fitness postcards die on that walk.
Not because direct mail is dead. Because the card was built wrong. Too much on it. No clear offer. A logo where a headline should be. It got a glance and a toss.
Here is what goes on the ones that make it to the fridge - and get a call.
Your postcard is not a brochure. It is not your whole school on one piece of paper. It has one job - get the right parent to take one action.
The second you try to say everything, you say nothing. Belt programs, after-school, the schedule, three locations, your bios. That is a website, not a card.
Pick one message for one parent. Cut the rest. A card a stranger gets in three seconds beats a beautiful one they have to study.
The top third of the card does most of the work. That is the part they see first, from arm's length, in the three-second window. Waste it on your school's name and you lost.
Your name is not a headline. Nobody is searching for you. They are feeling a problem - a kid who won't get off the screen, who can't focus, who gets pushed around.
A headline that works:
Remember - Nike never sold a sneaker. They sold a feeling. Your card sells a more confident kid, not a martial arts class.
Under the headline the card needs three things and nothing else.
Put a real phone number and a QR code that goes straight to a booking page. Not your homepage. The exact next step.
The offer is the hook. A trial pass in the mailbox is a reason to walk in without it feeling like a sales trap.
A card with no date gets set down "for later." Later never comes. A real deadline - a start date, a season, a class that fills - gives them a reason to move now.
No fake countdowns. Real ones only. School starts. The Halloween class fills. The fall session opens. Truth moves people. Tricks get tossed.
And remember - one card is a whisper. The families who call are usually the ones who saw you twice.
One drop tests your luck. A few drops build recognition. That repetition is the whole reason a neighborhood starts to know your name.
Before a single card goes to the printer, hand the design to someone who has never heard of your school. Give them three seconds. Then take it away and ask:
If they can't answer all three, the card is not done. Fix it before you pay to mail a thousand of them, not after.
You can design all of this yourself. The rules above are the whole recipe.
If you would rather not start from a blank page, our EDDM postcards are already built this way for martial arts schools and fitness gyms - one message, one offer, one action - in seasonal designs from back-to-school to Halloween to the holidays. They start at $537 for 1,000 cards.
Pair one with a trial pass - $97 for 1,000 - so every family leaves holding a reason to come in.
And if you do not want to touch any of it, EDDM 360 is our done-for-you local growth campaign. We handle the design, the routes, the print, and the drops, so you teach while the neighborhood keeps seeing you.
Design the card for the walk from the mailbox to the trash can. Win those three seconds and the phone rings.
Lose them and it does not matter how good your school is. They never called.
Make the card they can't put down.
