You Mailed The Cards. You Have No Idea If They Worked. - Dojo Muscle

You mailed 1,000 cards last season. Did it work?

Most owners cannot answer that. They remember a few calls. They think a couple of the new kids came from the mailer. Maybe. They are guessing.

That guess is the real reason direct mail feels risky. Not the cost. The blindness.

You would never run Facebook ads with the tracking off. You would watch every click, every lead, every dollar. Then you drop a thousand postcards and measure it with a shrug.

Here is how to fix that before your next drop, so the mail stops being a mystery and starts being a number.

Mail is trackable. You just have to build the catch.

The myth is that paper cannot be measured. Not true. Digital tracks itself. Paper needs you to build the catch before it goes out the door.

A card with your bare phone number and your homepage is a card you cannot trace. The response comes in, you have no idea which card sent it, and it blends into your normal walk-in noise.

So give every drop its own way to raise its hand. Three of these actually work:

    • A QR code that points to one dedicated landing page, not your homepage
    • A promo phrase they say to claim the offer, like "Holiday Kick"
    • A call-tracking number that lives only on the mailer

Pick one or two. Not all three. One clean signal beats three half-built ones.

    Set the before number first

Tracking the mail means nothing if you do not know your normal.

Before the drop, write down your average new walk-ins and web inquiries for a quiet month. That is your baseline. The mailer's job is to beat it.

When the cards land and your numbers jump above that line, you are not guessing anymore. You are reading a before and an after.

The one question that catches the rest

Some people will not scan a code or say a phrase. They just call, or they walk in. You still need to catch them.

So train one question at the front desk. Every call, every walk-in, same words: "How did you hear about us?"

Then write the answer down. Every single time. A notebook works, your CRM works better, but the point is you ask and you log it with no exceptions.

Half your attribution is just the discipline of asking.

    Your pre-drop tracking checklist

Do this in the week before the cards go to the post office, not after they land:

    • Build one landing page with the offer and a form, and point the QR code at it
    • Put a trackable offer on the card so claiming it leaves a trace
    • Write your baseline down and give your desk the one question

That is the whole system. An afternoon of setup turns your next mailer from a hope into a measurement.

After the drop, read it honestly

When responses start coming in, do not credit the mailer for every good thing that happens that month.

Count two things only. The coded responses you can prove came from the card, and the lift over your baseline. That is your real number.

And give it a few weeks, not a few days. Mail does not land and convert the same afternoon the way a click does. Watch the trend, not the first 48 hours.

    Why this matters right now

You are about to mail into the busiest stretch of the year. Holiday gift season rolls straight into the January enrollment rush, and the cards for it go out in the next few weeks.

So the tracking has to be live before that drop, not bolted on after.

What you put in the mailbox is the easy part. Our holiday EDDM cards run $537 for 1,000 homes, built for martial arts schools and ready for a QR code and a landing page. Pair one with a trial pass at $97 for 1,000, and the trial pass becomes the thing you literally count as it comes back through your door.

If you want the tracking built for you

You can wire all of this up yourself. None of it needs an agency.

If you would rather see your results without building anything, that is the whole point of EDDM 360, our done-for-you local growth campaign. We handle the design, the routes, the printing, and the drops, and the QR codes feed a tracking dashboard so you watch the scans come in instead of guessing.

Start with a free route scan and we will show you the neighborhoods worth mailing first.

Set up the catch this week. Then drop the holiday cards.

Guess, and you will mail again next year with the same shrug.

Measure, and the mailbox stops being a cost. It becomes a number you can grow.
