You mailed once. You got a few calls - or none. You decided direct mail is dead and went back to boosting posts.
The card was never the problem.
You quit on the exact touch where it was about to start working.
Nobody enrolls their kid in martial arts because one postcard showed up on a random Tuesday. That is not how people decide. So before you spend another dollar on mail this holiday season, understand how the decision actually gets made - because the math changes once you do.
Here is what happens inside the house when your card lands the first time.
They do not know you. You are a stranger. The card gets a half second and goes in the trash with the pizza menu and the roofing flyer. That is not a bad card. That is a first impression doing exactly what first impressions do.
Now the same family gets your card again a few weeks later.
Something clicks. "I have seen these guys." They do not call. But you are no longer noise. You are starting to be a name.
Third time, you are not a stranger at all. You are the local martial arts school. The one that keeps showing up. Now the card has a real job - because the person reading it already trusts the sender a little. That trust is what makes an offer land.
Marketers have said for decades that most people need to see you around seven times before they act. The number is not a law. The idea behind it is.
People buy from who they recognize. Recognition does not happen on contact one. It builds. Each touch does a different job:
Skip to the ask on touch one and you are proposing marriage on a first date. Of course it did not work. This is the same concept to earning a black belt that martial arts school owners want their students to understand.
But very often bail before it gets good.
You have a holiday budget. There are two ways to spend it, and most schools pick the wrong one.
Reach: mail more homes one time. Frequency: mail fewer homes more times. Owners love reach because a bigger number feels like more marketing. Frequency is what actually converts.
January is the biggest enrollment month of the year. You do not win it in January. You win it with three touches that land before the resolution even forms. Same homes, three drops, each one a different job.
Pair the EDDM card with something they can hold and act on. A trial pass starts at $97 for 1,000 and gives the family a concrete next step instead of a vague "come by sometime." The mailer builds the name. The trial pass closes the loop.
Design, print, and the USPS drop take time. To land drop one in mid-November, you are ordering in the next week or two. Miss that and you compress three touches into two, or into one - and you are right back where you started, mailing once and wondering why nothing happened.
Real deadlines, no games. The holidays do not move. The print clock does not care that you got busy.
It is. Picking routes, nailing the design, hitting the print window three times, mailing the same homes and not a random new batch each drop - that is where most owners fall off after touch one.
That is the whole reason EDDM 360 exists. We pick the highest-value neighborhoods around your school, handle the design and print, and run all three drops to the same households on schedule. You teach. We keep you in their mailbox until they walk in.
Start with a free route scan at EDDM 360 and see which neighborhoods around you are worth owning this season.
One card is a coin flip. Three is a system.
Mail once and you are a stranger. Mail three times and you are the only school they think of when January hits. Pick the version that fills your mat.
